Teen Volunteers Have Record Setting Summer

The Teen Volunteer Program at Alleghany Regional Hospital raised the bar this summer by raising more money than any group before them since the program’s inception.  In this 6-week program sponsored through Southwest Virginia Area Health Education Center (AHEC), 21 students from both Covington and Alleghany high schools joined together to volunteer more than 957 hours.  To be eligible for the program, the teens had to be at least 14 years old and have at least a “C” average.  The teens were then required to volunteer at least twenty hours and participate in at least two of the volunteers’ fundraisers for the Alleghany Highlands Free Clinic.

The teens held several fundraisers this summer to benefit the Free Clinic, including two bake sales and the Cutest Baby Contest, which were held at Alleghany Regional.  The teens then held several fundraisers in the community, including the Dunkin Donut sale, held outside Wal-Mart on July 10th, the Reverse Raffle which was held July 21st.  The teens also worked very hard to create the first Teen Volunteer Cook Book, "Serving up the Best Medicine," which is still available to purchase at Alleghany Regional Hospital or Curves for Women on Main Street in Covington. Through these fundraisers, the teens were able to raise $5,130.64 to donate to the Alleghany Highlands Free Clinic.

“The teen volunteers and I thank you for your support in each of our fundraisers to help us aide those who are less fortunate. The teens had an amazing summer as they learned more about the medical field and the hospital. This group of volunteers worked exceptionally well together and added energy and joy to Alleghany Regional Hospital.  This summer the teens raised more money than ever before. Even through their hard work I saw them having fun and I commend each of them for their dedication and enthusiasm!” stated Quincey Garcia, Teen Volunteer Coordinator.

The Teen Volunteers for the summer included:  Brittany Barnett, Heather Cooper, Katherine Day, Erin Durham, Katie Durham, Dillon Fisher, Callie Garrett, Brianna Johnson, Kandice Kitchen, Jasmine Moore, Larissa Moore, Alissa Morgan, David Moynihan, Kelle Persinger, Leah Pillow, Summer Richards, Neil Thompson, Jared Thrasher, Daylin Tyree, and Cheyenne West.  If you are interested in learning more about the teen volunteer program, contact Cindy Durham at 540-862-6212.  This program is a joint venture between AHEC and Alleghany Regional Hospital, and it is funded in part by a grant from the Alleghany Foundation.
